Fireflies Dim Down
Begin brightly, then soften your voice a little more with each paragraph.
A group of fireflies blinked outside the child's window. They flashed over the grass, around the flowerpots, and under the low branches. Their lights were bright and busy.
The child stepped onto the porch. Baa-Byte, a small kind sheep in a vest and headset, came along. His headset glowed with one gentle yellow dot.
The fireflies wanted to stay near the window, but their bright lights kept the room shining. Baa-Byte showed them his little dot. He made it bright, then medium, then low.
One firefly tried a smaller blink. Another waited before blinking. Soon they took turns: one soft light near the roses, one near the gate, one beside the porch step.
The child sat and watched. Blink, pause. Blink, pause. Baa-Byte lowered his headset light until it looked like a tiny crumb of moonlight.
The fireflies settled in the grass. They didn't turn off completely. They kept just enough glow to see one another while the child walked back inside.
Baa-Byte closed the curtain most of the way, leaving one narrow gap. Then he stretched out beside the bed and rested his head on his folded vest.
The child lay under the blanket. One firefly blinked, then another, each dimmer than before. The lamp went out, Baa-Byte rested, and the room grew still.
